#338 - Joni Mitchell - The Hissing Of Summer Lawns

A nice, slightly jazzy album that is dominated by Mitchell's voice which has a lightness that makes listening to this album feel like a late summer's evening. No highlights for me, but enjoyable.

#337 - Dion - Born To Be With You

A lush and richly produced pop album with a voice that reminds me of Chris de Burgh sometimes. There's a hint of country in several songs, but not nearly enough to call them country songs. There's a big instrumentation in all of the songs, filled with strings and winds. The songs themselves are nice and pleasing, without leaving a bigger impact though.

#336 - Emmylou Harris - Pieces Of The Sky

A dreamy country album with 10 unimpressive but nicely flowing songs with a soothing voice. Not bad per se, but there's just not that much in it musically, something that all country albums I heard here so far have in common.

#335 - Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run

A piano heavy rock album with several very nice melodical songs. They all have the typical Springsteen sound and a nice yearning atmosphere. Good album.

#334 - Burning Spear - Marcus Garvey

A solid reggae album without any highlights. Grooves by nice and easy.

#333 - David Bowie - Young Americans

The sound of this album is as steamy and turgid as the picture implies. It's not that all the songs and harmonies are bad, but the everpresent saxophone and the overall slightly funky sound make it hard to endure from start to finish. Includes an unnecessary "Across the universe" cover and the known "Fame", a song that could easily be used as music for sex movies.

#332 - Aerosmith - Toys In The Attic

An early Aerosmith album, but you can already hear the roots of their trademark sound. Not a great album, there are some nice fresh songs, but also some rather bland rock standard material.

#331 - Keith Jarrett - The Köln Concert

Oh, another jazz album, but wait! This is jazz I can live with. An ascetic live album containing a piano period. Inspirational harmonies, freely flowing, jazzy, yet always pleasing and understandable. A great piano album.

#330 - Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti

A very large album with songs ranging from the rather plain typical Zep blues to exotic and interesting songs like the famous "Kashmir".

Dienstag, 16. August 2011

#329 - Neu - Neu! 75

Two times three is six. Six tracks divided in two groups, the first three being very good atmospheric ambient songs, sometimes reminding of Sigur Ros, the latter three are much more rhythmic and less captivating.

#328 - The Dictators - Go Girl Crazy

A rough punk album with some neat riffs and melodic choruses, but also with some rather plain songs.

#327 - Brian Eno - Another Green World

An album with different impressions. Partly a rather boring mixture between ambient sounds and pop songs, partly neat naive pop songs, partly atmospheric ambient sounds.

#326 - Gram Parsons - Grievous Angel

A pleasant but bland country rock album, no edges, nothing outstanding.

#325 - Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom

Hard to describe this album. There are poppy elements, soundscapes and dark jazzy parts, combined with vocals ranging from balladesque to dadaistic. An interesting album that does not go into the ear, but it contains a lot and rewards an open listen.

#324 - Bob Marley & The Wailers - Natty Dread

A sunny, relaxing reggae album with the super hit "No woman, no cry" in its not so well known original version. The more famous live version sounds more refined and conveys the feelings better. There are no other hits or especially strong songs on this album, but they aren't weak either, 8 more pleasant and great sounding reggae songs.

#323 - Randy Newman - Good Old Boys

Another album by Randy Newman filled with perfect buddy songs. Apart from any lyrical changes there is no audible development in his songs, they're still the perfect accompaniment for Toy Story xy and any other purely nonsexual close buddy relationship.

#322 - Steely Dan - Pretzel Logic

A pleasant but unsurprising album that wanders between rock and pop and includes many different styles, but there are no strong songs on it.

#321 - Gene Clark - No Other

A lush and rich rock pop album which shows hints of different styles and sounds very pleasing while never really gripping me.

#320 - George Jones - The Grand Tour

A country album that sounds great as far as country goes, but since I don't like country that much, it didn't do very much for me.

#319 - Neil Young - On The Beach

A rather electric rock album (relatively to what I'm used to) by Neil Young with nice sounding songs. There's a little blues, but not so much that it strains me. No real highlight here, but it flows by nicely.

#318 - 10CC - Sheet Music

A relaxed album with poppy rock songs often flirting with reggae. No hard edges on this one, but also no big impact.

#317 - Queen - Sheer Heart Attack

The killer song of this album is of course "Killer queen". A song that could not have been made by a different band, if you don't know it, listen to it, again and again. There are other good songs, the delay-showcase "Now I'm here", sad songs like "Lily of the valley" or "Dear friends", but also rather odd songs like "Bring back that Leroy Brown" as well as some songs that are just mediocre. Not a good album throughout, but what big highlights!

#316 - Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson - Winter In America

An interesting blues / soul album with some very dark sounding songs, especially the first three and the last. A slightly jazzy, but also very dark instrumentation, haunting background singing, and a main voice that either sings soulful and mourningly, or it speaks, which in connection with the soul music almost sounds like hiphop. Very interesting.

#315 - Richard And Linda Thompson - I Want To See The Bright Lights Tonight!

A nice melancholic folk rock album with neat harmonic singing and pleasant songs, nothing very great, but solid good material.

#314 - Supertramp - Crime Of The Century

A rock/pop album with a hint of jazz in the sax solos, the songs often seem a little lengthy and don't contain lots of strong material. Even the hit "Dreamer", timing in at 3:30, gets long since the main hook is about 10 seconds long. Not a very good album to me.

#313 - Sparks - Kimono My House

Opulent, dramatic rock pop music in this album. The falsetto singing can be strenuous at times, but the songs are diverse, interesting and good.

#312 - Tangerine Dream - Phaedra

37 minutes of sounds, divided into 4 pieces, I won't call them songs, because they aren't. They're electronic soundscapes, acoustic atmosphere. It's hard to judge this album, I'm torn between it's not even real music and nice soothing sounds. Listening with today's ears makes this sound as a relatively bland synthie sound album, but in the context of time it was pretty modern and groundbreaking I guess. So it's probably important, historically, and there are no unpleasant sounds on it, but there's just not much to really like.

#311 - Roxy Music - Country Life

A rock/pop album with rather mediocre songs that are made special by the vibrato voice of the singer which you either like or don't. I didn't. The most interesting element of this album was the cover.

#310 - Queen - Queen II *

A pompous album by the widely known supergroup. It differs from the widely known radio / stadium hits in that it is a rather dark album with a fantasy theming in the titles. It brims with creativity and very diverse songs, from the heart-wrenching ballad "Nevermore" to the complicated epic rocker "March of the black queen". There are some less magnificient songs though, and in the end they deliver the biggest shot: the fulminant whirlwind "Seven seas of rhye". Great album.

#309 - Joni Mitchell - Court And Spark

A breezy easy largely acoustic album with nice songs, some hints of slightly different styles in some songs, like jazz or rock, and a pleasant voice. Nice listen.

#308 - Van Morrisson - It's Too Late to Stop Now

A very lone live album by Van Morrisson. The captured atmosphere was good, but I didn't like the songs especially much. The instrumentation was heavy on piano and sax, and while there was a guitar for the occasional solo or fill, I really missed it in the genreral accompaniment. The style reminded me of the stadium rock of Bruce Springsteen, it was mainly what I'd call party blues. Not horrible, but totally not my thing.

#307 - Kraftwerk - Autobahn

A pioneer electronic album from the pioneer electronic musicians Kraftwerk. There are beautiful simple melodies, rather soft rythms, weird german vocals and very modern sounding electronic sounds that paint an abstract but beautiful acoustic picture. Very nice album.

#306 - Eric Clapton - 461Ocean Boulevard

It starts with funk, moves to reggae ("I shot the sheriff") and delivers classic rock and smooth ballads. A diverse album with several very good songs.

#305 - Stevie Wonder - Fulfillingness' First Finale

Another funk/soul/pop album by Stevie Wonder, and it's filled with diverse songs that didn't really click with me, but they sound nice and there's a lot of creativity in them.

#304 - Shuggie Otis - Inspiration Information

A nice funk soul pop jazz experience brimming with creativity. No special highlights, but a good and interesting listen.

#303 - Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

Almost too much of an album, over 92 minutes of Genesis, and while there was a lot of good material, especially in the first half, it was just so very much. In the second half there were more experimental and istrumental tracks, and everything was filled under the roof with melodies, structures, rythms. It was a good listen, but I'm glad it's over.

#302 - Bad Company - Bad Company

A straight rock album with everything a rock album needs. There are the stompers, there's the cigarette lighter ballad, and I was honestly sad when it ended. There wasn't really a highlight, but everything was just plain good. Very good album!

#301 - Brian Eno - Here Come The Warm Jets

A very modern sounding album, sometimes rock, sometimes pop, often experimental, but never unentertaining. Interesting listen.

#300 - New York Dolls - New York Dolls

A rough punky rock album which made me feel like on repeat, the songs are over after 40 seconds and everything repeats until the song ends. Strong gritty material, but not my kind of good.

#299 - The Isley Brothers - 3+3

A nice flowing soul/funk/pop/rock album with pleasant songs and a funky accompaniment that's not too funky for the one listener.

#298 - Iggy & The Stooges - Raw Power

A punky dirty rock album that has a lot of gritty power, but not much else. Wasn't really fun to listen to.

#297 - Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies

A mighty bad rock album from Alice Cooper. Contains the known hit "No more Mr. Nice Guy" which sounds a bit old-fashioned, even in the context of 1973. As before the music doesn't sound all that bad as they probably hoped it would. A solid album.

#296 - The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Next

A pretty good bluesy rock stomper with powerful songs that are not hugely great but they make for a good listen.

Mittwoch, 22. Juni 2011

#295 - Paul McCartney And The Wings - Band on the Run

Another album from the ex Beatle, and it's a nice one. There are a couple of good songs on it (the title track, "Jet", "Ninteteen hundred and eighty five"), and also some rather forgettable tracks. The only question is if this is good enough for a guy that wrote songs like "Yesterday" and "The long and winding road".

#294 - ZZ Top - Tres Hombres

A rather insiginificant bluesrock album from the bearded people. It's fast straight blues rock, but there are no special songs, no hook. It's a solid album, but that doesn't make it any special.

Dienstag, 21. Juni 2011

#293 - Stevie Wonder - Innervisions

A funk/soul album filled with funk/soul. It often is the sticky kind of funk, wich I don't really care for. The slower soul songs are a little better, but nothing really clicks with me.

#292 - Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

First of all, to me the album doesn't sound as big as it seems to be (over 1300 reviews on amazon, many other big albums have ~300). Most of the songs are very relaxed slow rock songs, flowing nicely and with a rather dark mood and somehow feeling very open and airy. Even the vocals have a kind of thinnes to it. I didn't like the saxophone parts much, but my most favorite song was "Us and them".

#291 - Waylon Jennings - Honky Tonk Heroes

A relaxed and okay country album. Nothing very special about it, no great songs, no great voice, no great music, but it's all good as far as country goes.

#290 - Steely Dan - Countdown To Ecstasy

A nice rock/pop album with pleasant songs and nice harmonic singing. No big thing, but enjoyable throughout.

#289 - Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

Another box of pralines, but this time all with a flavor I don't really like, wich is John's voice. It's just a matter of personal taste, the songs are good examples of very nice pop songs, ranging in mood and style. With a different singer I'd probably have liked this album.
