#134 - The Beatles - The Beatles (The White Album) *

Think of an album that contains several tracks that aren't even songs ("Revolution 9", "Wild honey pie"), some slow boring songs ("Yer blues", "I'm so tired"), a couple of songs where the band tries hard (and fails) to be heavy ("Why don't we do it in the road", "Helter skelkter"), a number of rather boring and uninspired songs ("Back in the USSR", "Glass onion", "Everybody's got something to hide except me and my monkey", "Savoy truffle"), a horrible birthday song ("Birthday"), two forgettable songs that are supposed to sound like from the 1920s ("Martha my dear", "Honey pie")  and some songs that sound a bit like they were made for children ("Ob-la-di, ob-la-da", "Piggies", "Continuing story of bungalow bill") with the according potential to be annoying. I already mentioned 15 songs so far, so it has to be like the worst album in the world, right? But what if this album also contains a lot of wonderful acoustic gems ("Blackbird", "I will", Mother nature's son", "Cry baby cry), a great and inspiring 2 minute song that contains ideas and elements out of which others make whole albums ("Happiness is a warm gun"), touching heart-wrenching songs ("Julia", "Long, long, long", "Good night"), some songs that are just pure rock-pop jewels ("Dear prudence", "Sexy sadie", "Revolution 1") and one of the greatest songs ever ("While my guitar gently weeps")? You're looking at the famous white album by the Beatles of course, and it is a mixture of oh-so-very great and not that great. It's not a landmark like the previous Sgt. Pepper, but the good songs on it more than make up for the lesser stuff, and if you count the single that accompanied this album, a certain song named "Hey jude", you have a total winner.
